How Balloons Help Scientists
Balloons are often used for fun at parties or festivals, but they can also play an important role in science. Some balloons are designed not to stay close to the ground but to fly very high in the sky. These are called weather balloons, and they are used by scientists to study the Earth’s atmosphere.
Weather balloons carry special tools that measure things like temperature, air pressure, and wind speed. The information collected by these tools is sent back to scientists on the ground. This helps them understand weather patterns and make better forecasts. Some balloons can even go as high as 35 kilometers above the Earth—much higher than airplanes fly.
One of the biggest advantages of weather balloons is that they are much cheaper than satellites or airplanes. They are often made of very light material and filled with gas to float easily. Because of this, many countries can afford to use them to collect useful data. Balloons are especially helpful in places where it is difficult to build large weather stations.
However, weather balloons have some limits. For example, they can only stay in the sky for a few hours before they fall back down. Scientists must also make sure that the balloons do not cause problems when they land. Still, even with these challenges, weather balloons continue to be a useful tool for studying the world around us.
(26) What is one thing weather balloons do?
(27) What is one reason countries use weather balloons?
(28) What is one problem with using weather balloons?
